Are Fixed gear bikes fun to ride? What are the best brands to try?

I’ve been hearing so much about them lately, and it’s gotten me rather interested. Are they enjoyable to ride, or just trendy right now? What would you recommend to a beginner such as myself in the way of fixed gear/track bike companies? I’ve only even rode bmx and beach cruisers, so I don’t know much in the way of fixie brands. Thanks for the help!

You hit the correct word – trendy. That’s about it. Only one speed or gear, terrible for uphill climbs & if you’ve never ridden one before, very difficult to get used to. No brakes. The rider is the brakes. If you pedal forward – the bike goes forward. Backward – the bike goes backward. To stop, one must slow his/her rate of pedaling down to nothing.

Some (few) are equipped with front brakes only. Sure you want to try this? I’d be looking into a good road bike first – then a fixed gear. A really good one will run you about $769.99. $819.99 in the flat bar variety.
